Carbon cleaning – Lamborghini Gallardo, Audi R8, S5, RS5, RS4, RS6, 2.0T – anything with direct injection (TFSI / TSI / FSI)

Carbon build up, carbon cleaning, carbon coke….some words you may of heard if you own a direct injection car.

How do you know if your car is direct injection…. Most petrol Audi, VW, Seat & Skoda’s from 2006 have direct injection and also the Lamborghini 5.2 V10’s . The engine will either be a FSI (normally aspirated, no turbo or supercharger), TFSI or TSI. Here is a little list of common engines which we have carried out carbon cleans.

What causes carbon build up….. Since fuel is not sprayed down the inlet manifold and over the intake valves, carbon deposits from the crankcase breather system, which is plumbed into the inlet, get baked onto inlet valves under normal driving conditions. After approx 40,000 miles you’re intake valves will look like this.

There is no easy solution to clean the intake valves but to remove the inlet manifold and put in some hard labour to clean them. We have tried all types of chemicals and cleans from very well known companies who come and carry out carbon cleans, nothing removes the carbon build half as well as physically removing it. There are also other things to consider.

  • It may cost more remove the inlet and remove the carbon build up by hand but you can see with your eyes what has been done and how much has been removed.
  • We don’t use any chemicals so no need to worry about your engine oil being contaminated.
  • We remove the carbon and do not flush it through your engine and down your exhaust. I don’t think blocking your cat with carbon is a good sacrifice for removing it from your inlet valves.
  • We carry out airmass logs and time 30-70mph runs before and after to demonstrate the performance gains.

 

Another big issue we are also seeing which is a direct relation to the carbon build up is leaking injectors or blocked injectors. Cars which are not cleaned at around 40,000 miles, generally have slight misfires or ‘running too lean’ faults. This will require the injectors to either be replaced or refurbished.

What will this do to performance?

This B7 RS4 was timed using Racelogic performance meter and timed from 30 – 50 and 50 – 70 mph. The results are clear to see.

Audi RS6 C6 5.0 V10 – engine oil leak

The Audi C6 RS6 5.0 V10 is a great car, huge tuning potential and they look damn cool but they have their problems. One of the main ones being the dreaded oil leak. Now many cars can have oil leaks but when you have a huge 5.0 V10 twin turbo shoehorned under your bonnet, an oil leak can be a pain to rectify. I am not just talking about a weeping cam cover gasket or leaking oil cooler, I am talking about the dreaded auxiliary drive seal. Its a round seal which costs about £1 but the engine needs to be removed to get to it!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So why does the engine need to be removed???? Well you need to remove bank 2 turbo, alternator, engine mount, oil pump and a few other bits to be able to reach the auxiliary drive seal.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So a leaking oil seal which costs £1 will actually cost you over £3K. This is not just labour but also all the other seals, gaskets, oil, anti freeze, AC gas, power steering fluid etc etc.
